supriseSurprise! Yes, this is a Harlequin and no it doesn’t have a devilish figure. He’s just cute!

A harlequin is known for being a bit of a prankster, but I wanted to do something different and in this case decided to make him sweet.

I wanted to create a costume character, but I didn’t want it to end up being the typical clown. I’m not much of a fan of clowns, this probably due to the movie It and Problem Child. These movies have made clowns seem a bit creepy. The other option was to make a mime, but they also seem quite annoying. So as you can see I was left with the option of doing a jester or harlequin so it’s more or less in between.

I was interested in creating a pattern for the costume and due to this it looks more like a Harlequin since the diamond pattern is more particular to this type of character. The hat probably isn’t the usual one, but I liked the idea of adding bells to it like those seen on a cat’s collar. In respect with the collar for me was the most complicated part, since I couldn’t find a good example for making it ruffled. The hair style came from a manga character I found through the internet which I modified and adapted for this character. He also has mittens for hands, but this is because I was thinking about winter and I prefer mittens over gloves. Of course I could have used black and white for the color or even red, but these colors reminded me of the Harlequin character in Batman and I really do like pink so basically I toned it down a bit.  Overall, he seems very nice.
